چکیده
Department of Biochemistry, Kasturba Medical College, Madhavanagar, Manipal – 576104, India odium potassium ATPase (Na+-K+ ATPase) and Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G 6 PD) activities in different tissues have been found to be stimulated by thyroid hormones. In erythrocytes, the activities of these enzymes were reported to vary. The aim of our study was to determine the sodium potassium ATPase and glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase activities in patients with hyperthyroidism and compare them with those of patients with euthyroid goiter. UMaterials and MethodsU: After approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee and obtaining informed consent from all patients, 40 hyperthyroid patients (17 men, 23 women; mean age 44.75±2.6 years) and 50 patients with euthyroid goiter (13 men, 37 women; mean age 37.2±1.6 years) were included in the study. They were classified based on T3, T4, TSH measurements. Erythrocyte Na+-K+ ATPase and G 6 PD activity were measured using spectrophotometry. UResultsU: In hyperthyroid patients, Na+-K+ ATPase activity was significantly lower compared to euthyroid controls (134.98±3.78 vs. 164.34±3.85 nmol pi/hr.mg protein, p<0.001) and G 6 PD levels were significantly elevated when compared to euthyroid controls (19.19±0.438 U/g Hb vs. 11.505±0.385 U/g Hb, p<0.001). UConclusion U: Hyperthyroidism is associated with decrease in Na+-K+ ATPase activity and increase in G 6 PD levels when compared to patients with euthyroid goiter. The measurement of Na+-K+ ATPase activity could be used as an early marker for diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.

Effect of Sodium Bicarbonate and Sodium Chloride on Renal and Hematologic Factors in Patients with Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency
Background: Sodium bicarbonate serum therapy is used for compensation bicarbonate lost and increasing blood pH in metabolic acidosis caused by severe anemia in patient with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. The aim of present study was comparison the effect of serum therapy using two different serums (serum with bicarbonate and without bicarbonate) on some renal and hematolo...

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a cytosolic enzyme which its main function is to produce NADPH in the red blood cells by controlling the step from Glucose-6-Phosphate to 6-Phospho gluconate in the pentose phosphate pathway. G6PD deficiency is the most common X-chromosome linked hereditary enzymopathy in the world, that result in reduced enzyme activity and more than 125 different mu...

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) in humans is an X-chromosome-linked disorder and housekeeping enzyme, vital for the survival of every cell. It catalyses the oxidation of glucose-6-phosphate to 6-phospho gluconate in the first committed step of the pentose phosphate pathway, which provides cells with pentoses and reducing power in the form of NADPH. NADPH is required to protect the cell...
متن کاملThe Effects of Hypo- and Hyperthyroidism on Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Activities in Regions of Rat Brain
The variations of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity in different brain regions of normal, hypo- and hyperthyroid rats were investigated. Hypo- and hyperthyrodism were experimentaly induced by administration of methimazol and liothyronine, respectively. In normal rats, midbrain had the minimum (70 mU/mg) and cerebral cortex the maximum (349 mU/mg) G6PD activity. Hyperthyrodism in...

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme catalyses the first step in pentose phosphate pathway (conversion of glucose-6-phosphat to 6-phospho gluconat) which provides cells with pentoses and reduction power in the form of NADPH. In the present study we have analyzed the G6PD gene mutations in 76 patients with a history of favism in Khorasan province in Iran. DNA samples were analyzed for...
